Join us for a day of creativity, movement, and connection with nature at the beautiful Valley Rock Inn. This immersive, all-levels workshop is designed to spark your artistic energy while grounding you in the present moment through yoga and plein air painting.
We’ll begin at 8:00 AM with a gentle outdoor yoga session on the lawn, led by Jen Batson, a certified yoga instructor and energy healer. Yoga mats and blocks will be provided to help ease you into the day with mindfulness and intention.
After yoga, we’ll gather our materials and select nearby plein air locations on-site to begin painting. Anne Goffin Smith, a landscape oil painter, will assist participants in choosing their spot and setting up their easels. She’ll offer a brief demonstration and guidance on basic composition, color mixing, and brushwork, and will provide individual support throughout the day.
At 11:30 AM, we’ll break for a prix fixe lunch at the café (included) — vegan and gluten-free options available. For those interested, a swim is also an option either before lunch or in the afternoon (please bring your own swimsuit and towel).
We’ll return to painting in the afternoon, continuing to explore and express our creativity in nature. Around 3:00 PM, we’ll gather as a group to share our work and reflect on the day’s experience.
The goal of this workshop is to tap into our creativity, to experiment with painting in an outdoor setting, drawing on inspiration from all of our senses!
• Your own artist supplies and materials (a recommended supply list will be provided)
• Oil or acrylic paints are recommended
• Swimsuit and towel (optional, for swimming)
Artists are responsible for cleaning up their own materials. To protect the environment, turpenoid cleaners, oil rags, and paper towels must not be discarded on the premises or in the toilets. Thank you for helping us keep the space clean and safe for all.
This workshop is an opportunity to experiment, be present, and create in an inspiring outdoor setting.
All levels are welcome.
I attribute my early love of art to my Belgian grandmother, whose impressionist painting style and encouragement resonates with me still. I studied at Georgetown University, after which I went down to Mexico to study art and Spanish at the Institute Allende. I then returned home and earned a master’s degree at Pratt Institute in NYC, after which I worked as an art director in New Orleans.
I love learning and have taken many classes and workshops with wonderful artists such Janet Fish and Gary Godbee, among others. Yoga and mediation rank highly in my favorite things to do list! I currently live in New Jersey.
8 AM-9 AM Yoga on the lawn with Jen Batson.
9 AM-11:30 Short painting demo by Anne, followed ( or preceded) by setting up of easels in the Rose garden or by the pool.
11:30 AM. Prix Fixe Lunch at the Cafe (included in price)
12:30-3 pm: Paint, Paint, Paint
3:30 PM Group share of paintings and discussion of process.
4pm Begin breaking down of set ups. Workshop concludes.
